Air pollution
Contaminants or substances in the air that interfere with human health or produce harmful environmental effects.Alternative Energy
Alternative energy
Environmentally friendly energy from uncommon sources such as wind power or solar energy.
Alternative fuels
Similar to alternative energy. Transportation fuels (excluding gasoline or diesel) like natural gas, methane, bio fuels and electricity.
An ancient, holistic system of health maintenance from India which seeks to avoid disease by creating balance in your body and mind.
Biodiesel
Biodegradable, nontoxic, low-emissions fuel, derived from renewable resources that can be used in diesel engines.
Blackwater
The wastewater generated by toilets.
Compost
Partially decomposed organic material, used in gardening and agriculture as a soil amendment.
Ecotourism
Travel to places of ecological significance, done in a way that attempts to minimize one's impact on those places.
Global warming
An increase in the Earth's average surface temperature as the result of a buildup of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, largely due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation.
Green Design
A term used to describe furniture, consumer products, landscaping, or new or renovated buildings that use recycled or natural materials, minimize waste, or reduce energy consumption.
Greenhouse Gases
Naturally occurring and manmade gases that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Greenmarket
An open-air public marketplace where farmers and other vendors sell produce and some other food products directly to consumers. Also called farmers' markets.
Greenwashing
As more and more consumers become concerned about the environment and choose to support companies with sound environmental practices (or shun those who pollute or otherwise harm the planet), companies have seized on "green" as a marketing opportunity. But many companies touting supposedly green practices are really obscuring their environmentally destructive policies.
Locally Grown
Food that is sold close to where it was grown. In most regions of the U.S., the types of produce and other goods vary season to season, with a bountiful selection in the spring, summer and autumn, while root crops and cold-stored items make up the bulk of winter's offerings.
Nutritional Supplements
Herbs, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, or food supplements taken to treat a specific condition or to improve overall health.
Omega-3s
Polyunsaturated fatty acids that are found in certain fish and the seeds of some plants.
Organic
Foods that are grown and produced without the use of artificial or man-made pesticides, fertilizers, additives and genetically modified organisms.
Raw Foods
Foods that are consumed in an unheated, unprocessed and non-chemically altered state.
Vegetarian
One who keeps a diet that omits meat, fish or poultry products.
Wind Farm
Wind energy is the process of using the motion of the wind to generate electricity.
