The Movie Thing: Spiderman 3

May 4, 2007

Rarely is a sequel better than the first.. and even more uncommon.. a third film topping them all. Yes.. I am talking about "Spiderman 3".. the perfect film to kick off the summer movie season.

A $250 million dollar budget, nearly a thousand CG and special effects shots and three bad guys... this third installment of "Spiderman" is bigger, better and darker. Peter Parker.. played by Tobey Maguire.. is very different this time around.. dare we even say arrogant. This Spiderman thing has gone to his head.. and no one sees it more than his girlfriend.. Mary Jane Watson.. played by Kirsten Dunst.

The roles between the two have switched.. with Mary Jane.. now a flop on Broadway.. taking a back seat to Spiderman's success. Kirsten Dunst said, "Peter has great success. Spiderman is being heralded and it kind of shifts and Mary Jane loses her job, so in a way Peter is not there for her as much as she'd like him to be and so his career kind of is the main focus of the relationship and so she's kind of pushed aside a little bit."

While Spiderman's ego is growing more and more out of control.. it makes him ripe for turning to the darkside. A black alien spiderlike form grows on him and attaches itself.. making Spiderman vengeful and violent. Maguire said, "he's not helpless, he's not a victim....he's choosing these things even if his actions or his behavior get away from him a little bit, he's still responsible for his actions."

In the midst of his own battle with evil.. Spiderman has three bad guys to contend with.. James Franco as Peter's former friend Harry....now the new Green Goblin. Sandman, played by Thomas Daden Church....and photographer Eddie Brock, payed by Topher Grace.. who becomes venom. Topher Grace said, "there are no boundaries playing a villain you know I'm used to playing a protagonist and there's kind of like a bell that goes off in your head when you realize maybe you're going outside the bounds of reality but here I'm playing a half psycho-path alien symbiate so there is no bell going off."

Director Sam Raimi wanted "Spiderman 3" first and foremost to be about the story.. the love between Peter and Mary Jane.. and a tale of friendship. He accomplishes all of that.. with the added plus of a big blockbuster complete with all the bells and whistles. The fight sequences are nothing short of spectacular and there's no question.. the third time is the charm.

"Spiderman 3" is rated PG-13.
