The Movie Thing: Georgia Rule

"Georgia Rule" looks like the perfect mother's day movie.. three generations of women learning how to love and appreciate each other. But this film is not at all what it seems and winds up wasting the talents of three very skilled actresses.
No one ever said a mother-daughter relationship was an easy one. Jane Fonda and her daughter.. played by Felicity Huffman.. haven't spoken in more than a decade. Now.. Felicity is continuing the trend with her own troubled daughter.. played by Lindsay Lohan.
Huffman decides she can no longer handle her daughter's drama.. so she drops her off in Idaho to live with her grandmother for the summer. Of course... this decision is not a popular one.. especially when Lindsey learns.. at grandma's house.. it is all about Georgia rule. Playing Georgia was a lot of fun for Fonda.... "the way that I kind of hold it all together is with rules. You show up on time and if dinner is at 6 you're there or you don't eat. You don't take the Lord's name in vain or I stick a cake of soap in your mouth. That was really fun you know in 'Monster In-Law' ...I got to slam Jennifer Lopez's face in cake and in this one I get to stick a bar of soap in Lindsay Lohan's mouth. It was fun!"
The three women instantly bonded on set.. despite playing characters with such huge differences, Fonda said, "we felt like a family, we felt like a team. It was very easy to work with both of them and, of course, Felicity....she's a pro. She's brave. She'll try anything and it was a privilege to work with her." Huffman said about Fonda, "she is very strong and very smart and has a big presence and yet is so open and so loving and so soft and so vulnerable and brings her formidable talent and her incredible dedication to the set. so she just raises the level of your game. lindsay was a complete delight. I just love that girl."
To play a tough-talking teen rebel... director Gary Marshall said only one name came to mind....Linday Lohan. Marshall said, "to be a fresh mouth and to be extremely vulnerable, Lindsay is one of the best at playing this and never really played it much and despite her night club life some place, she's a fine actress and the only one I thought of for this part."
From the previews.. "Georgia Rule" appears to be a sweet, fun comedy. That couldn't be further from the truth. I found its bleak view of life disturbing and hardly entertaining. The characters and their situations are totally unbelievable. These roles are a waste of time and talent for these actresses and i found myself just wanting it all to end.
"Georgia Rule" is Rated R.
