Justin Timberlake leaves his clean cut days behind him for a role in this dangeroulsy dark drama. Based on a true story.. it's a movie you won't soon forget.. and not for the right reasons.
They're Southern California teenagers with nothing better to do then party, drink, and deal drugs. But things really spin out of control when an enemy of the group.. played by Ben Foster.. fails to pay back some drug money he owes. The guys decide to kidnap his little brother until he can come up with the cash.
"Alpha Dog" chronicles three fateful days in the California desert. Written and directed by Nick Cassavetes.. he began his story telling journey by writing down some of the events that were taking place at his own daughter's high school. Cassavetes said, "It's kind of indicative with what's going on with young people today. It's certainly not the totality or the blueprint with what's happening with every set of youths but it happened. it happened at my kids' school... the more I dug into it the more I was fascinated by it."
Playing one of the ring leaders in the drug dealing group is pop star Justin Timberlake.. making his feature film debut. His character... Frankie.. is likable and charismatic.. but not strong enough to stand up for what he knows deep down is right. He says he connected with the story because he felt it was real. Timberlake says, "this isn't just a Southern California story. This is a this happens in middle America. This is a statement of youth. This is a statement of youthful misguidance and loss of perspective and bad parenting. There's so much in this movie."
While the film is predominately about gangs, drugs and thugs.. Timberlake says.. at its heart.. it's also got a deeper message.
"Alpha dog" is violent, profane and extremely disturbing. I didn't find it the least bit entertaining or even artistic.. just loud, gratuitous and excessive.
"Alpha Dog" is Rated R.
